Quick and Architect

Two ways to work on the same model. Quick has a short toolbar for rooms, walls and paint; Architect has SketchUp's menus, toolbars and keys. Switch any time from the top bar.

Stori3D shows itself in one of two ways. The model, its files and what you can do with them are the same in both: only the menus, the toolbar and a few clicks change.

  • Quick: rooms, walls and paint, with a short labelled toolbar along the bottom. For laying out a home, pricing a job or furnishing a room.
  • Architect: SketchUp's menus, toolbars and keys, with every panel in view. For drawings, sheets, IFC and modelling by hand.

Switch between them

The switch is at the top right, beside Undo. On a tablet it's a chip with the mode's name; on a phone it's under the ⋮ menu, as How you work. You can also switch in Settings → How you work, or press Shift+S and type switch to.

Switching doesn't change the model and isn't an undo step. A tool you're using ends as Esc would end it; the selection, the camera and the level stay as they were.

The first time you open Stori3D it asks How do you work? If you've used Stori3D before, you start in Architect, and nothing you use has gone.

Nothing is out of reach

Quick shows less, but takes nothing away:

  • Each menu ends with More ▸, and with Find any command…, which lists what that menu leaves out.
  • Shift+S finds any command in either mode. In Quick, a command its menus don't show says where Architect keeps it.
  • Fields Quick leaves out of a panel are under a More… button at the end of it: More properties, More project settings, More site tools, More in the library.
  • Tags and Scene are under More at the end of the side rail.
  • Every key works the same in both modes.

What clicks do differently

A few tools start differently in each mode. Each one has a switch on its bar, and the switch remembers your choice for that mode.

| Tool | Quick | Architect | |---|---|---| | Paint | Whole room: a click paints the room's walls, its floor, or the outside walls | One surface: the surface clicked | | Roof | Whole building: one roof over all the outside walls | One room | | Walls | Add floors: closing a loop adds its floor | No floor | | Door, window | Keep placing: click again for the next one | One at a time |

Paint's modifiers are the same in both: Shift everywhere with that finish, Ctrl (⌘) what's connected, Alt picks up a finish.

Quick's toolbar

Select, Room, Wall, Door/Window, Stair, Roof, Paint, Furniture, then Walk, Plan view and Zoom extents, and More for the rest. A tool you find in Search or More stays on the bar for next time. Settings → My toolbar changes what's on it.

Architect's menus and toolbars

Architect has SketchUp's menus: File, Edit, View, Camera, Draw, Tools, Window and Help. Window opens panels by SketchUp's names: Entity Info is Properties, Outliner is the Scene panel, Model Info is the Project panel.

View → Toolbars… shows SketchUp's toolbars: Getting Started, Large Tool Set, Views, Solid Tools and the rest, and Stori3D's Building. The status bar along the bottom keeps the Measurements box on. More in Coming from SketchUp.

Where it's kept

The mode you pick is kept in this browser, so another computer asks again. On a shared computer, turn on Ask me again next time in Settings → How you work, and the next person gets the question.
