Doors and windows

Place doors and windows in walls, set their size, hinges and position, and open them to see how they work.

Doors and windows sit inside walls and cut their own openings. Move one along its wall, or into another wall, and the old opening closes while the new one opens. Each one is a real-size, parametric product with a frame, glass and moving parts.

Place a door or window

  1. Open the Library and pick one under Windows or Doors. Each tile shows its starting size. You can also press D for a door or N for a window, or click Add door or Add window in a wall's Properties panel.
  2. Hover over a wall. The opening snaps into it, facing out of the side you're on.
  3. Click to place it. Press F (or Flip side) first to face it the other way.

Doors stand on the floor. Windows go in with their sill 900 mm above the floor. Hover over the floor instead of a wall to place one on its own, then use Place in a wall later. Esc cancels.

The windows are Picture window, Casement, double and Horizontal slider. The doors are Pivot entry + sidelight, Sliding patio door, Steel-grid French and Flush interior.

Change a door's or window's size

Select it and type a new Width and Height in the Properties panel. The frame rebuilds around the new size, with its profiles kept at their real thickness. Each change is one undo step.

Each type has a smallest size it can be built at, such as 600 × 1800 mm for Flush interior, and the fields stop there. The largest is 6 m wide and 4 m high. An opening always stays within its wall's length.

Swap the hinges

For doors and windows with hinged or sliding parts, the Hinges left or Hinges right button mirrors the leaves to the other jamb. Plans draw the swing from that side. Flip side turns the whole opening to face the other way through the wall.

Move it along the wall

  • Drag a selected door or window to slide it along its wall, or drop it on another wall.
  • Click Move to another wall in the Properties panel, then click the wall it should go to.
  • Use Move (M) and type a distance to slide it an exact amount along its wall.

For an exact spot, type into Position under Transform. The first value is how far its centre is from the middle of the wall, and the second is its height above the floor, both in metres. For a window, that height is its sill. A window keeps its sill height when you move it to another wall.

Select wall jumps to the wall it's in.

Copy a door or window

Select one and press Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V, using Ctrl (⌘ on a Mac). The copy goes into the same wall, beside the original, ready to move. Copying a wall brings its doors and windows with it.

Open it

Doors and windows with moving parts have a Door open or Window open slider in the Properties panel. Drag it to swing hinged leaves or slide panels, from closed to fully open. The setting is saved with the project, so a view or render can show a door ajar.

When you walk through the model, press E to open or close the door or window in front of you. Walk mode puts them back as they were when you leave. See Navigating the model.

Add product details

To record the real product a door or window is, fill in the Product section in its Properties panel: who makes it, its name, code, a link and notes. The details go into the Products schedule and IFC exports. See Furniture and the library and Schedules and properties.
